About: Oracle + Open Source
Since 1991 when I first installed Linux, I’ve been interested in Open-Source. In 1996 I got involved with Oracle. I found it fascinating, and challenging. I saw the two worlds inexorably colliding, or joining forces - choose your own metaphor.
A few years later Oracle DBAs were hacking the SCO version to run on Linux. I managed that trick and only wanted more. Rumor had it that a lot of internal folks at Oracle were already running Oracle on Linux as it had been ported in a couple of days!! Next thing you know Oracle is releasing the product on Linux, never say never!
Once word spread that the world’s best database could be run on the world’s fastest and cheapest operating system, everyone from DBAs to Wall Street CEOs wanted in on it. Shortly thereafter Oracle began to change course from Sun to Linux, and the rest as they say is proverbial history.
Nary a day goes by when the worlds Oracle and open-source aren’t mentioned in the same sentence. Apache is the middleware? PHP is the darling language of the day? Some dreamers even say the Oracle source itself will someday be open-source.
Interesting times indeed!
